Abstract

<PICT:0374628/III/1> Apparatus for sterilizing articles, e.g. packages of food, tobacco, &c., comprises an X-ray tube and means for progressively p advancing the articles through zones of different intensity. As shown, the articles, fed by a belt 28 to a stop 31, are transferred by a pusher 32 to U-shaped holders 18 secured to an endless chain 13 supported by internal annular sprockets 16, 17 and external sprockets 20, 21. Within the sprocket 16 is disposed a vertical, hot-cathode, X-ray tube 10 having an anode disposed at right-angles to the tube axis. Intermittent movement is imparted to the chain 13 through the sprocket 21 which is connected by gears 22, 23 to a ratchet wheel 25 actuated by a pawl 24 driven by a crank 26. The pusher 32 is actuated from the crank 26 through a rod 33, lever 34, and shaft 35. Guide rails 39 support the holders 18 which are formed of an inner portion 18d of rubber, bakelite or other solid dielectric, and an outer portion 18e of metal. The packages 19 are progressively moved across the holders by the pusher 32 and are finally discharged through a shoot 37.
