Abstract

374,489. Fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., Titanic Works, Lincoln, and PAYNE, M., 50, Hook Road, Surbiton, Surrey. March 6, 1931, No. 7088. [Class 103 (i).] In fluid-pressure,brakes for motor vehicles the power actuating device is carried by a pivotal link element of the transmission, one relatively movable part of this device being fixed to the link and the other relatively movable part being attached to a fixed support through a link which serves as a force-transmitting element and not as a support for the power actuating device. The brake piston 1 is fixed by a rod or cable 2 to a fixed part of the chassis and works in a movable cylinder 3 connected to the brake transmission 4. The cylinder carries a valve housing 7 containing a hollow suction valve 8 seating on a port 9 and controlling the suction connection 10 and a valve 11 seating on the open end of the valve 8 and controlling the atmospheric ports 12. The valve 8 is normally maintained closed and the valve 11 open by springs 13, 15a respectively. The valve 11 is closed and the valve 8 opened to apply the brakes by a rod 14 and a pedal 15. If the pedal is then maintained stationary the consequent movement of the cylinder recloses the valve 8 and maintains the brakes applied. The rod 14 is provided with a stop 16 which is adapted to engage an abutment 17 to form a lost motion which when taken up allows the brakes to be applied by foot pressure on the pedal. The rod 14 slides in a cylindrical guideway and forms with the connection of the cylinder to the transmission, supports for the self-contained power unit which takes the place of one of the pull rods of the transmission.
