Abstract

374,051. Charcoal kilns. BUCHANAN, J. A. and HARRIS, P., Forest Products Research Laboratory, Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. Feb. 23, 1931, No. 5582. [Class 55 (i).] A portable charcoal kiln comprises a shell of externally flanged metal sections, forced into contact by wedging action or by tensioned bands encircling the kiln or by both means, and channel members enclosing the joints and filled with sand. In one form, Fig. 3, the sections 1 are provided with tapered flanges 2, the joints between which are staggered with regard to the joint 3 between the plates. The plates are held together by channel members 6 adapted to be filled with sand and forced over the flanges 2 by tensioned wire ropes 4, Figs. 1 and 2. In a modification, Fig. 4, slotted bosses 7 on one flange of each pair, pass through apertures in the other flange and are held in position by wedges 7a. Additional flanges 8 serve to hold sand-filled channel members 9 secured by wire ropes as before. Radial roof sections 20 formed with bends 20a, each abut three sides of the polygonal kiln and are supported on flanges near the tops of the sections 1 and by central vertical strips 15 riveted to a ring member 18 having pins 24 passing through holes in the roof sections. The roof sections are provided with channel members 21, Fig. 6, the flanges 21a of which are covered by inverted channel members 22, and which are adapted to be filled with sand. The kiln is formed with air-admission passages at the base and with a central vent in the roof, and in addition each roof member has a vent hole 25 and an adjustable cover member 26 therefor. Cross stiffeners 11 are provided on the side members 1 and sand boxes 12 may be arranged inside the kiln to prevent distortion by heat.
