Abstract
373,770. Endless tracks for vehicles. CLEVELAND TRACTOR CO., Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. May 14, 1931, No. 14336. Convention date, Jan. 22. [Class 79 (i).] A shoe for an endless track comprises a ground-engaging portion with upstanding rail portions forged from a single metal blank. In the construction shown the rails 9 are formed with bosses 5, 6 for the pivot pins 8, and the tread 1 is formed with a groove 2 adapted to be engaged by a grouser 3, the latter being secured to the tread by bolts 7 when required. To form the shoe a rectangular metal blank is inserted between dies 12, 13, Fig. 5, and is hammered or pressed to the shape shown, the tread portion 1 being of semi-circular form. The bosses 5, 6 and the groove 2 are formed in these dies. The flash is then trimmed off in dies 14, 15, Fig. 6, apertures 11 being simultaneously formed in the rails 9 of the shoe. The holes for the pivot pins are then punched or drilled, the shoe now being of the form shown in Fig. 8. Next, one rail of the shoe is held in a jig 18 by a member 17, and a roller 19 is forced by a ram 20 along the curved tread portion 1, rolling this portion straight against the face of the jig 18 and bringing the other rail into a position parallel to the fixed rail. The second rail is finally brought into its exact position by plungers 21 while the ram 20 still holds the tread 1 in place. The roller 19 is formed with a rib 22 which engages the groove 2 in the tread and ensures the accurate placing of the shoe in the jig.
