Abstract

373,037. Cellulose tubes. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. Oct. 2, 1931, No. 27420. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1930. [Class 99 (ii).] Tubes &c. of compositions having a basis of cellulose derivative are made by winding sheets of the material under pressure on to a mandrel and causing or aiding the layers to adhere by softening or a swelling agent. The latter may be applied to the cellulosic material before and/or during the formation of the tube, or the material may be caused to pass through a bath of the softening agent; alternatively the mandrel is disposed within the said bath. The wound tube is preferably completed by the application of heat and pressure. Two or more sheets of cellulosic material of differing composition may be employed in making a single tube. The invention is particularly applicable to the manufacture of the barrels of fountain pens and pencils.
