Abstract
390,810. Cellulose tubes. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. Oct. 8, 1931, No. 27939. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1930. [Class 99 (ii).] In the manufacture of tubes &c. of compositions having a basis of cellulose derivative by winding sheets of the material upon a mandrel 4, the several layers are caused or aided to adhere by heat applied to the material by a heated roll 3 over which the material passes during winding. The length of path of contact of the sheet 1 with the periphery of the heated roll may be varied by altering the position of a guide roll 2, and the mandrel is preferably pressed on to the roll 3 under the action of a weight 7 or spring to consolidate still further the layers of the tube. A solvent or swelling agent may be applied by a spray 9 to the sheet while it is passing over the heated roll; alternatively a cellulosic cement of doughy or gummy consistency is applied thereto. If necessary the tubes are completed by the action of heat and pressure in a mould. Two or more sheets of cellulosic material of differing composition may be employed in making a single tube. The invention is particularly applicable to barrels for pencils and fountain pens.
