[Class 60.] Guides and rests.-Apparatus for sharpening, smoothing, or polishing razor blades consists of an endless band formed by tables b secured to a chain driven by a motor a, the tables having narrow ends to receive, upon guide-pins, the blades c. On both sides of the band are grinding &c. devices f<1>, f<2>, f<3> having grinding &c. wheels g driven by pulleys e, and secured to the supports for the wheels are adjustable guide-rods p beneath which the blades move during the grinding, the tables also engaging by ribs b<1>, in guide grooves in the machine frame during grinding. The blades are placed on, and removed from, the band by pneumatic or electromagnetic devices h<1>, h2, the device h<1> lifting a blade from a magazine k and moving to set it upon the band, and the blades being raised in the magazine, as each one is removed, by a plate operated by gearing m. In order to avoid turning the magazines to treat the second edges of the blades, these may be changed over automatically, as shown in Fig. 8, wherein two conveyer bands b2, b3 are employed and a, reciprocating slide 3 is arranged between the bands, to move a slide 4, and, through a slide 5 and rack gearing, to cause swinging of arms 14 carrying electromagnets 15. Teeth on the slide 3 also drive spindles 19, and through gearing 20, spindles 21 on which are slidable electromagnets 22. Movement of the slide 4 moves the magnets 22 on the spindles, and these by their rotation swing the magnets to the position shown in dotted lines, whence the magnets 15, which are energized as the magnets 22 are de-energized, remove the blades and, by swinging about their pivots, remove the blades to the other band for treatment of the other edge ; pneumatic devices may replace the electromagnets. The magazines holding the blades may be arranged on a rotatable disc to bring a full magazine into the place of an empty one.
