Description

w. OWEN 1,966,869 APPARATUS FOR GRINDING THE vmews OF GLASS SHEETS July 1 7, 1934.
Filed Nov. 23. 1933 H1 mm mm w N H m w 4 r v w 6 A w Q NH mmwa H... @mmmawuw. a u o w R k m NH m 5 W. OWEN July 17, 1934.
APPARATUS FOR GRINDING THE EDGES OF GLASS SHEETS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Nov. 23, 1933 \W II \N. JNH
INVENTOR lower end to the plate 26, while the rod 29 is provided at its upper end with a knobbed handle 32, adapted to fit into a curved recess in the plate 28. A slot 33 extends from the curved recess to the end of the plate, permitting the ready application and release of the clamping device.
In operation, the rotation of the screw 6 from the motor 9 causes the beam 3 and grinding de vices carried thereby to move down past the ends of the Windshields so that the grooved grinding wheels act thereon and round them, as indicated in Fig. 3, the grinding wheels finally arriving at a position below the table which carries the windshields. The movement of the parts is preferably stopped at this point by automati'c means. Such automatic means preferably includes a rod 34 slidably mounted in brackets 35, '35 "carried by one of the beams l, and provided with a pair of adjustable stops 36, 36. The ends of the rod 34 are adapted to operate a pair of limit switches 3'7, 3'7 whose operating arms are in the line of movement of the ends of the rod. When the downward grinding movement of the apparatus is completed, a stop member 38, carried by the arm 4, engages the lower stop member 36 moving the rod down and opening the limit switch 37. The opening of this switch cuts off the supply of current to the motor 9 and also to the motors 17 which rotate the grinding wheels. The table 23 is now shifted so as to bring another set of Windshields into position for grinding, and on starting the motors 9 and 17 by means of a suitable push button arrangement, the motors are reversed, and the beam 3 moved upward so that the new set of Windshields is edged on the upward movement of the grinding wheels. This arrangement for grinding on both the down and up movement of the grinding wheels in connection with the use of the table having the two seats for handling two sets of Windshields, reduces the time lost in operating the machine and increases its capacity materially.
Provision is made for adjusting the cross heads carrying the arms 13, 13 toward and from each other to take care of work of different size by the use of a pair of adjusting screws 39 which are threaded through nuts carried by the cross heads and are suitably swiveled against endwise movement in the beam 3. Each of these screws is provided with an operating wheel 40, over which passes a sprocket chain 41, by means of which the operator can adjust the cross heads toward and from each other. When the apparatus is used for edging the sheets lengthwise thereof, the arms 13, 13 are adjusted to the position shown in machine A, and the Windshields 19 are supported in the position shown upon a table "42 similar to the table 23 except in the matter of height. In this case, one of the templets 43 is curved in order to cause the grinding wheel to follow the proper path to edge the curved sides of the windshields. The operation in this case is the same as that heretofore described, machine A being employed for edging the long sides of the windshield, and machine B being employed for edging the shortsides. 1
What I claim is:
1. In combination in apparatus for edging glass plates, an upright guide frame, a beam mounted for vertical movement in the frame, a pair of cross heads carried by the beam and adjustable therealong, a pair of depending arms pivoted to the cross heads at their upper ends, a grooved grinding wheel and'driving motor therefor carried by the lower end of each arm, means for yieldingly pulling the two arms toward each other, a table located between the arms, means for supporting a glass plate to be edged in a vertical position upon the table, a pair of templets carried by the table, means movable vertically with each of the grinding wheels for engaging one of the templets, and means for raising and lowering said beam.
2.. In combination in apparatus for edging glass plates, an upright guide frame, a beam mounted for vertical movement'in the frame, a pair of cross heads carried by the beam and adjustable therealong, a pair of depending arms pivoted to the cross heads at their upper ends, a multiple grooved grinding wheel and driving motor therefor carried by the lower end of each arm,
-means for yieldingly pulling the two arms toward each other, a table located between the arms, means forsupporting a plurality of glass plates to be edged in vertical positions upon the table, a pair of templets carried by the table, means movable vertically with each of the grinding wheels for engaging the templets, and means for raising and lowering said beam.
3. In combination in apparatus for edging glass plates, an upright guide frame, a beam mounted for vertical movement in the frame, a pair of cross heads carried by the beam and adjustable therealong, a pair of depending arms pivoted to the cross heads at their upper ends, a multiple grooved grinding wheeland driving motor therefor carried by the lower end of each arm, means for yieldingly pulling the two arms toward each other, a track at the lower end of the guide frame extending transversely of said beam, 8. table mounted for movement along the track and provided with two spaced supporting seats, means for clamping a plurality of glass plates to be edged in a vertical position on each of said seats, a pair of templets carried by said table on the opposite sides of each of said seats, guide means movable vertically with each of said grinding wheels for engaging the templets when one of said seats is positioned midway between the arms, and means for raising and lowering said beam.
4. In combination in apparatus for edging glass plates, an upright guide frame, a beam mounted for vertical movement in the frame, a pair of cross heads carried by the beam and adjustable therealong, a pair of depending arms pivoted to the cross heads at their upper ends, a multiple grooved grinding wheel and driving motor therefor carried by the lower end of each arm, means for yieldingly pulling the two arms toward each other, a table located between the arms, means for supporting a plurality of glass plates to be edged in vertical positions upon the table, a pair of templets carried by the table, means movable vertically with each of the grinding wheels for engaging the templets, a vertical threaded shaft for raising and lowering said beam, and a motor for driving said shaft.
