Abstract

372,806. Printing- machines; roll holders ; coating webs. CROWLEY, H. F., 65, Chancery Lane, London. Dec. 9, 1930, No. 37165. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] Rotary machines; inking- apparatus; feeding webs.-In a machine for printing and moistening a gummed tape or strip, the strip 3 is drawn from a reel 4 on a spindle 12 which is mounted . in slots 12a in brackets 10 adjustably secured to a support 9 by means of screws 11 which can be fixed in the desired lateral position in a slot 11a in the support 9. The reel 4 is braked by means of springs 14 arranged between the brackets 10 and the reel, or between the brackets and nuts 13 on the ends of the spindle 12. The strip passes over a guide roll 40, between a printing-roller 22 and an impression roller 29, and is passed over the reel and around a roller 41 which preferably acts as a blotter. The projecting end of the strip is normally gripped between a fixed plate 7, which is formed at its end with a serrated cutting edge 8, and a spring-pressed plate 42 which is depressed when the strip is pulled by hand to effect the operation of the machine. The act of pulling the strip causes it to contact with a brush 5 secured by a clip 6 to the edge of a water trough 2 forming a part of the base of the apparatus, or as a separate trough secured to the base. A felt-covered roller may replace the brush 5. The plate. 7 is formed with an aperture 44 to facilitate grasping the end of the strip. The roller 22 is inked by rollers 16, 23, 24, 25. The roller 16 is mounted in a trough 15 provided with a filling aperture normally closed by a pivoted plate 21. The cover of the trough is adjustable towards the roller 16 and is fitted with a brush or scraper 19 to regulate the supply. The roller 23 is mounted in pivoted arms 26 which engage an adjustable screw on the machine frame. The rollers 24, 25 and the rollers 22, 29 are mounted in slots in frames 30 carried by levers 32 which are pressed to the left by springs, the movement being controlled by adjustable screws. Springs 31 are provided to press the roller 29 towards the roller 22, and bearers are provided on the rollers 22, 29 to limit the printing pressure.
