Abstract
372,474. Magnetic tests. SPERRY PRODUCTS, Inc., Manhattan Bridge Plaza, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Perry, W. M.; 56, Cambridge Place, Brooklyn, and Jones, G. L. ; 112, Hilton Avenue, Garden City, Long Island, both in New York, U.S.A.) March 13, 1931, No. 7778. Convention date, March 18, 1930. [Class 37.] Electromagnetic trolley-car apparatus for detecting flaws in rails &c., the detector apparatus being raised when not in use, is provided with means for moving the detector apparatus inwardly and then outwardly while it is being dropped into engagement with the rails to ensure correct alignment. The detector mechanism at each side of the car may be operated separately, or may be interconnected, and is normally biassed outwardly in its elevated position. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the rail wheels 18, contact brush holders 17, detector sled 20, cylinders and pistons 25, 26 are mounted in universal bearings comprising rings 28 journalled in brackets 36 secured to the car, the rings 28 also having bearings for the cylinders 25. The swinging movements of the detector mechanism are obtained by rollers 45 engaging cam faces 40 fixed on the car. At the end of the swing, the cam is constructed to produce a buffering action while the brushes 15 contact with the rails. Where rail curvature is great, the cams 40 are pivotal and are interconnected by a horizontal frame 50, Fig. 5, the frame having location wheels 60 carried by bars 62 pivoted to the car at 70. The operator can therefore locate the rail by manipulating a handle 65 and making observations through a window 71 in the car floor.
