[Class 27.] Testing coins; insertion of coin in empty apparatus, preventing.-The coin is inserted through a slot 3, Fig. 1, in the casing 1 of the apparatus and through a slot 11 in a rightangled flange 9, Fig. 3, of a vertical partition plate 7. A deep guide 15 supports the coin on one side, this guide being fixed to the flange 9 and carrying a top member 17 to which is fixed, on the other side of the slot 11, a second guide 19 to support the top edge of the coin. Behind the slot 11 is pivoted a bellcrank lever 23 pivoted at 21 and controlled by a spring 35. When a coin is inserted, its top edge engages the short arm 25 of the bell-crank lever 23 to move the long arm 27 so that an offset coin remover 31 carried thereby comes into alignment with the guide 15, Fig. 3. When the coin is fully inserted, the spring 35 returns the bell-crank lever and the remover 31, engaging the bottom of the coin, flicks the coin laterally through a slot 33 in the plate 7. The coin falls between the plate 7 and a plate 41 to a position where it operates to release the apparatus. A small coin or a thin coin, which drops into a V-notch 13 at the bottom of the slot 11, fails to move the bell-crank lever or moves it insufficiently so that such a coin either drops between the plate 7 and a plate 46 to a return opening 5, or is prevented from being inserted by the remover 31 coming into alignment with the slot 11 instead of the guide 15. A cardboard disc is buckled by the strength of the spring 35. In an article vending machine, when the machine is empty, an arm 55, Fig. 1, of a lever 53, 55 is moved to a position to obstruct the coin remover 31. The lever 53, 55 is connected by a chain to a " following " weight on the pile of articles.
