Abstract

371,943. Tea withering. MAIN, J. A., Clydesdale Ironworks, Possilpark, Glasgow. Jan. 31, 1931, No. 3162. [Class 34 (ii).] In a controlled tea-withering process, air is passed through the enclosure containing the leaf racks and periodically over heat-exchanging means in order to maintain it within the limits of temperature and humidity demanded by the condition of the leaf. Withering is carried out at a temperature of about 60-80‹ F. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a chamber with trays or shelves 2 facing the airtight doors 3. The shelves 2 may be pivoted to a partition disposed longitudinally in the centre of the chamber and may be withdrawn or tilted when the doors are opened or removed. Air enters through a duct 5 and strikes the first set of transverse heating or - cooling coils 6 and after passing over a tray containing tea passes in contact with another set of coils. The'air thus passes alternately in contact with the heat-exchanging devices and with a section of the leaf racks. If a reversible air current is to be employed, a set of heating or cooling coils is placed adjacent to the outlet duct 7. As shown in Fig. 4, the leaf racks 8 are enclosed in a number of chambers connected in series by ducts 10 in which the heating or cooling coils 11 are placed.
