[Class 131.] A device for winding hair on a curler under tension comprises a body part which is adapted to be rotatably traversed along the curler and is provided with a spring-controlled hair guide which bears upon the curler and forms in combination therewith a clamp through which the tress of hair is drawn under tension. As shown in the Figure, the winder comprises a clip A which is adapted to be rotatably traversed upon the curler B and is provided with a boss C carrying a hair guide D. The guide D consists of a U-shaped or V-shaped frame, one limb 1 of which bears upon the curler B and is provided with a zig-zag or twisted extension 2 forming slots or openings for engaging the hair, whilst the other limb 3 is secured within a sleeve 4 journalled in the boss C. The sleeve 4 is formed with an enlarged end 5 which abuts against the upper end of the boss C and is slotted at 6 to receive one end 7 of a coiled spring 8 the other end 10 of which is anchored to a rotatable sleeve 11. The lower end of the sleeve 11 seats upon the flanged head 13 of a tubular plug 12 which is rotatably mounted on the boss C. The plug 12 is provided with a tubular extension 14 which forms a bearing for a coiled clutch spring 15, one end 16 of which is anchored to the sleeve 11 whilst the other end is free. The flanged head 13 of the plug 12 is slotted transversely at 13a so that it can be engaged with the clip A to look the plug 12 relatively to the sleeve 11. A cap 27 slidable on the boss C and slotted at 28 to engage the slip A surrounds the plug 12. By rotating the sleeve 11, the tension of the spring 8 can be adjusted to control the pressure of the limb 1 of the hair guide D upon the curler, the return movement of the sleeve being prevented by the engagement of the clutch spring 15 with the extension 14 of the plug 12. The clutch is released by sliding the cap 27 along the boss C, and thus disengaging the slot 13a of the plug 12 from the clip A. In a modification, the clutch comprises a ratchet wheel which is secured to the bottom of the sleeve 11 and engages a detent secured to a lug attached to the clip A, a lever attached to the lug serving to move the sleeve 11 longitudinally to release the clutch. The clip A comprises a base plate 17 to which is pivoted a jaw 20 adjustable by means of a set-screw.
