Abstract

371,828. Moulding bricks &c. in pressing-and-jigging machines. DANIELS, W. H., 174, Pestalozzistrasse, Heerdt, Dusseldorf, DANIELS, J., 28, Wandastrasse, and KOPPERS AKT.-GES., H., 29, Moltkestrasse, both in Essen, both in Germany. Jan. 26, 1931, No. 2583. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1930. [Class 87 (ii).] A jigging moulding-press fitted with apparatus for applying a top pressure to the material during the jigging operation, is constructed with the top pressure plate guided by and movable relatively to a ram which in turn moves relatively to the mould to apply the pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show constructions in which the mould 2 is jigged by mechanism 4 (not shown) underneath the table 3. The guided ram 6 is raised and lowered by rack- and-pinion gearing 9, 10 operated through worm gearing by rotating the handle 16. The pressure plate 5 slides in the ram and is either connected thereto by the spring 53, or slides freely therein, in which case a hand-operated clutch 21 is used to lock it in set position relatively to the ram. In operation, the pressure-plate and ram are lowered as a unit until the plate contacts with the material. The clutch 21 then is released so that the weight of the plate is taken by the material. After jigging, the clutch is re-engaged and the unit raised again. The spring 53 when used increases the dead-weight pressure of the plate on the material. A hydraulic cylinder 22 strips the mould from the article through the agency of the rods 26 connected to lugs 30 on the mould, while the press-plate 5 holds the article on the mould table. Turnbuttons 45 normally centre the mould and hold it down on the table. For stopping the travel of the ram 6 on the upstroke as soon as the compression of the spring 53 is relieved and the block is ready to be stripped, a projection 130 on the ram, which engages a latch 69 on the downstroke and trips the shaft 70 by moving it axially against the pressure of a spring 75, re-engages the latch 69 and rotates the shaft, thus raising the pawl 76, Fig. 4, and freeing the block 77 to relieve the tension on spring 96. This allows the weaker spring 97 to disengage the sliding clutch member 88. A hand-lever 84 is used for resetting the clutch after the stripping operation. A heavier press is described in which seven pairs of springs are inserted between the mould plate and the ram. The ram in this case forms the movable cylinder of a hydraulic press which is moved relatively to a fixed ram. The return movement is performed by the cylinder 22, as before ; and the moulds are mounted on wheeled trucks and run into and out of the press. Clamps and wedges are used to fix the trucks during the moulding operation.
