[Class 92 (ii).] Cartridge-feed mechanism for machine guns having a rotary drum magazine from which the cartridges are withdrawn rearwardly during recoil comprises (1) means, such as spring clips 8, Fig. 1, which retain the cartridges prior to withdrawal and are released by inclines 151 on the pivoted extractors 15a on the breechbolt 15, and (2) means for rotating the magazine during the return of the breech-bolt by an escapement mechanism, 24, 27, Fig. 6, mounted on the breech-bolt. The magazine is formed of cartridge-holders 4 radially disposed between upper and lower plates 2, 1, the latter carrying a central conical hub 3 which is placed over a post 12 fixed to the gun and retained by catches 18 on the post which are controlled by a pushbutton 211 that can be operated by the hand when holding the leather grip 10. The base of the magazine fits over pins 17 on a rotary plate 11 the underside of which has studs 23 forming teeth for engagement with a spring pawl 27 on a bar 24 attached to the breech-bolt. The bar has a rib 24<1> which passes between adjacent studs on each side of the plate to prevent feeding of the magazine except when the breech-bolt is near the end of its return movement, a gap 24<11> in the rib then registering with a stud 23 as shown in Fig. 9. During rearward movement of the breech-bolt, the pawl folds into the gap when passing between adjacent studs, as shown in Fig. 8, and afterwards is moved outwards by a spring plunger 29. On the return movement, the pawl engages between the next pair of studs 23, as shown in Fig. 9, to rotate the magazine one step and bring the next cartridge-holder 4 into line with the extractors.
