Abstract
371,145. Conical mills; impact pulverizers. MORDEN, C. W., Oregonian Building, Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. March 30, 1931, No. 9608. Convention date, April 1, 1930. [Class 59.] A beating or refining engine for paper pulp &c. has an attritioning element comprising two relatively rotatable circulating members en. compassed by a peripheral passage connecting a peripheral inlet and outlet, the cross section of the passage and its relation with the inlet and outlet causing all particles of material to travel a substantially equal distance in returning from the outlet to the inlet. Pulp from a pipe 21, Fig. 1, controlled by a valve 21a falls into a bin 25 having a counterweight 26a and is tipped into a vat 20 having an outlet d from which it is received by impeller blades 10 on a shaft 2 rotated by a motor c. The pulp is thrown against the walls of a casing band passes down a converging annular passage h into a compartment b<2> in the base of a shell b<1>, it is then passed upwardly by centrifugal force, between a plug 4 on the shaft 2 and the shell b<1>, the opposed surfaces having bars or abrasive members. A fresh batch of pulp increases the pressure, and displaces the treated pulp through valves o, p, or the valves o, p may be removed and the pulp fed in continuously at e and delivered at 11, part of it re-circulating through the passage h. The motor shaft c<1> has a thrust bearing 3, and the lower end of the shaft 2 in flexible rubber bearings k of the water-lubricated type, the shell b<1> being adjusted towards or from the plug 4 by worm gear m. In a modification, Fig. 3, for wood chips &c. for wall board &c. pulp passes from an inlet 60 to blades 63, and blades 66 on a cylindrical wall 65 the pulp being thrown against a screen 62 which separates part of the water, the thickened pulp passing through passages 68, 59 ; it is then acted on by elongate hammers 82 pivoted at 81 in the plug 55 and passes through a passage 69 to secondary blades 64 where it meets the incoming dilute pulp, the part which has been sufficiently reduced passing through the screen 62 and the remainder recirculated. The machine functions as that shown in Fig. 1, by opening an outlet 85 and substituting a solid plate for the screen 62. In an alternative apparatus, Fig. 2, for feeding batches of pulp automatically at intervals from a vat 33 to a machine 30 a float 38 is connected to a two-way switch 39 controlling electric circuits 40, 41 of a reversible motor 42 driving worm gear 42a controlling an outlet valve 44. Pulp is supplied by a pipe 35 and excess drained at 36. When the pulp rises to the level shown the circuit 40 is closed, the valve 44 opened, a two-way switch 46 connected thereto breaks the circuit 40 stopping the motor and closing contacts in the circuit 41 so that when the pulp batch has been fed through the pipe 32, the circuit 41 is closed and the valve 44 shut. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also the passage h may be closed by a plate at the lower end, causing pulp to pass straight through as in a Jordanengine and states also that the machine is applicable to materials now treated in colloid mills &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
