Abstract

370,463. Hair and hand dryers. MARTIN, W. L., 1858, East 40th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. Oct. 9, 1930, No. 30292. [Class 81 (ii).] In apparatus which may be used for drying the hair or hands and comprising a shell 24, an air circulator 46, and electric heating means 39, the inlet and outlet openings, 34, 30 are arranged adjacent one another at the same end of the shell so that the inflow entrains part of the outflow. The inlet and outlet openings are formed by concentric groups of apertures in a bowl-shaped plate 22 closing one end of the shell. The circulator comprises a motor-driven centrifugal fan having an additional set of blades 48 which draw air in through the motor 12 to prevent overheating. The heating means comprises a resistance carried by eyes secured to an inner shell 18. The space between the shell 18, 24 communicates with the atmosphere by way of apertures 29 in the plate 22 and the air passing out from apertures 30 sets up eddies causing an air flow between the shells. The device is carried by a supporting ring 11 hinged to an adjustable pedestal 52. The ring carries a tube 56 provided with aT-piece carrying tubes 58 provided with lamps 60 and reflectors 59. An adjustable rheostat 98 and an exposed resistance 94 which may be shortcircuited are fitted in series with the motor. The resistance 94 enables the motor to be operated at the same speeds on A.C. and D.C. circuits. The circuit connections are shown in Fig. 5. In an apparatus for drying the hands the axis of the shell and motor is arranged vertically and the supporting ring rests on the top of a tubular pedestal. The motor and heating element are connected in parallel so that they can only operate together and the controlling switch is arranged at the foot of the pedestal. When the hands are placed over the mouth of the shell the amount of recirculation may be 50 per cent
