Abstract
370,442. Controlling variable-speed gearing. IMPROVED GEARS, Ltd. and WILSON, A. G., 23, Queen Anne's Gate, London. Dec. 8, 1930, No. 37019. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to change-speed epicyclic gearing in which a speed is brought into action by the application of a preselected brake by a spring- actuated bus-bar e, Fig. 3, which is rocked about a knife-edge e<1> by a pedal against the spring to disconnect the drive, as described in Specification 328,660, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.]. According to this invention, cam selector and other mechanism shown in Fig. 4 is supported upon a cover-plate p detachable from the gear casing A. Selection is effected from the steering column of a vehicle by operating a lever s, Fig. 3, supported by the plate p and geared to turn a shaft f carrying spaced cams g, Fig. 4, in different phases. The cams g are shaped to allow one only of a number of levers k to be advanced by its spring v so as to thrust a selected strut d into the path of the bus-bar e as it rises on release of the said control pedal. There is a brake band a, Fig. 3, and a toggle actuation for each of the brake drums B of the epicyclic gearing, not shown. As the selected strut d rises, it turns a lever b tightening the selected band a. An interlock to allow one only of the struts d to be raised is also supported on the cover-plate p. This comprises pivoted blocks m suspended side by side between two fixed stops m<2>, Fig. 4. As a strut d is raised by the bar e, a snug n on the strut is guided by inclines m<3> in between a pair of blocks m. The other blocks m move so as to fill the whole of the space between the stops m<2>, and so prevent the entry of another snug on another strut.
