Abstract

Petroleum asphalts and tar distillates are improved by the action of air, oxygen, or halogens, in presence of sulphur and of alkalies, alkaline earths, or salts of the nature of alkalies. The halogens may be used combined e.g. as calcium chloride. The paraffin content of the asphalts is reduced by the process, and ductile products obtained. The products may be dissolved in "carbolineum" (chlorinated tar oils).
