Jan. 1, 1931, No. 121. [Class 51 (ii).] In a blast furnace which is outwardly flared at its upper end the arrange. ment is such that a continuation of the surface of the charging bell 35, when in its closed position will cut the flared portion 26 above the plane of mini. mum cross 'section The furnace preferably tapers upwards from the bosh, and merges into the flared portion with a smooth curve. The stock line is protected by plates 31 anchored to plates 33, 39 built into the lining, the upper plates 33 having extensions 46, which engage T-members 47 secured to the outer shell 29, so that the lining can expand independently of the shell. The lining of the uppermost part of the furnace head is supported independently of the shaft lining by an upward extension 49 of the shell 29.
