Abstract
369,968. Tractor-trailer couplings. KARRIER MOTORS, Ltd., CLAYTON, R. F., AVERNS, R. DEAN-, and MEEK, P., Karrier Works, St. Thomas's Road, Huddersfield. Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38643. [Class 79 (iii).] A tractor-trailer coupling device comprises a substantially horizontal detachable connection between a point on the tractor and the trailer turntable and a similar but adjustable connection between a point on the tractor and the front axle of the trailer, the arrangement being such that equal tractive efforts may be exerted through the two connections. A cross-bar c is attached by means of clamping brackets b to the front axle a of the trailer, which may be an ordinary horsedrawn or other vehicle. The rear end of the tractor is provided with a ramp f up which rollers d beneath the brackets bride as the tractor is backed under the trailer or as the trailer is drawn up. The ramp carries the axle beyond the tractor rear wheels g, dipping slightly until the rollers d reach stops f<2>. The adjustable connection comprises a threaded bar k with a forked rear end terminating in hooks k<1> adapted to engage the cross-bar c, the threaded portion working through a nut member j rotatable in a bracket i pivoted between side frame members h of the tractor, the nut being manually or otherwise operated through chain and bevel gearing n, j<2>, j<1>. Vertical frame members v reinforce the frame members hand also serve to carry a transverse member r with lugs r<1> apertured to receive a cross-pin s whereby a forked connecting member t, pivoted to the usual connecting eyes u<1> on the trailer turntable u, is connected to the tractor.
