Abstract

369,722. Discharge apparatus GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and BREADNER, R. L., of General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. Feb. 17, 1931, No. 5043. [Class 39 (i).] A method of sealing off a glass tube of wide bore consists in placing a closing - mem ber of fusible material preferably glass, within the tube, and then softening the member by heat so that is makes a fused joint with the wall of the tube. Fig. 1 illustrates the use of the method for sealing the exhaust tube 1 of a vacuum tube. The closing- member 3 consists of a bulb made from glass having approximately the same coefficient of expansion as glass tube 1 but having a much lower softening temperature. It is placed in a side tube 4 where it does not prevent the flow of gas to the exhaust pump, and it may be fitted with a coil 6 of iron wire to enable it to be moved along the tube by means of a magnet. A construction 5 is formed on the tube 1 at the place where the seal is to be made, and after exhaustion has been completed, the bulb is moved into contact with the constriction. The tube 1 is then heated at the constriction until the wall of the bulb softens and unites with the wall of the tube. The pressure of the air within the bulb assists in forming the joint.
