Abstract

369,655. Discharge rectifiers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN, 13D, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Dec. 19, 1930, No. 38338. Convention date, July 9. [Class 39 (i).] In gas-filled rectifiers with one or more shields between the cathode and one or more anodes, one shield 12 is cylindrical with a closed cross section surrounding the cathode 11 and is shaped or mounted asymmetrically with respect to an anode 6. Different paths for the electron discharge from the cathode to the anode pass through the two open end, of the shield 12 but one is shorter than any other, reverse discharges being thus suppressed. In modfications, the asymmetry is ob tained or increased by additiona shields screening the anode witl respect to parts of the cathode or shield 12, for example, the shield 12 may carry a further shield extending at right-angles to it along the anode 6. As shown, the shield 12 is symmetrical with respect to the cathode and the anode 6 is mounted over one .end of the cathode. Alternatively, the anode may be centrally positioned and asymmetric in shape, or the shield may extend beyond the cathode farther at one end than at the other or may becut away at one end on the side near the anode. The lead 7 to the metal or graphite anode 6 may be covered with baked-on ceramic material or with a steatite tube 8 secured to the anode by such material. The cathode 11 may be coated with oxide or alloyed at its surface with emissive metal or may be indirectly heated. At starting, a discharge may be produced between the screen and the cathode or the screen is connected to the anode through a resistance or condenser. Specifications 345,080 and 357,794 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also shields not completely surrounding the cathode and having a narrow or wide opening at the side remote from the anode. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
