Abstract

369,264. Shoe inseam sewing- machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester.-(United Shoe Machinery Corporation ; 140, Federal Street, Boston, U.S.A.) Dec. 4, 1930, No. 36560. [Class 112.] Boot-sole sewing machines ; welting and turnshoes; feed by awls ; feed by needles.-A continuous or substantially continuous work-feeding movement is imparted to the work in a shoe inseam sewing-machine in part by the cooperation of a channel guide with the needle moving back and forth together in the line of feed. A yieldingly mounted back gauge moving to and fro alternately with the needle in the line of feed assists in the continuity of the work-feeding movement. The invention is described as applied to a machine for sewing an upper to a turnshoe sole and having workengaging devices comprising a curved hook needle 4, a channel-guide 52, a back gauge 76, and an awl or feed point 74 as in the machine described in Specification 115,235, [Class 112, Sewing &c.]. The needle 4 is mounted on a carrier 6 which is integral on one side with a sleeve 8, adapted to be reciprocated on a shaft 10 in the line of feed by a cam-actuated lever 22 through ball-and-socket connections, and on the other side with a shaft 12 coaxial with the shaft 10 and on which is sleeved a rotatable and slidable hub 14 for the channelguide 52 and a thread finger 62. A needle guide 38 rigid] y mounted on the shaft 10 is oscillated in time relation to the needle 4 by a rack 46 and gear segment 44. The channelguide 52 is moved to and from the work by a lever 56 operated by a cam on the main cam shaft 28 and the thread finger 62 is similarly operated substantially in the line of feed and in the opposite direction to the feed of the work. The awl 74, which is situated on the same side as the needle and pierces the work from the outside, and the back-gauge 76 are mounted on a second slide so as to receive in similar manner work-feeding and work-engaging movements. The back-gauge 76 is held yieldingly against the work by a spring mounted in a recess in the carrier 78.
