Abstract
393,643. Chain stitching. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. and RICKS, F., Union Works, Belgrave Road, Leicester. Dec. 10, 1931, No. 34230. [Class 112.] In sewing together the welt, upper, and insole of a shoe by a chain stitch seam, a curved hook-needle, a looper and a thread finger are employed, means being provided to move the looper towards and from the needle during each cycle of operations of the machine to carry the thread into the path of the thread finger and into the hook of the needle. The invention is illustrated as embodied in a machine such as described in Specification 13873/10, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], with a continuous work-feeding mechanism such as described in Specification 115,235, [Class 112, Sewing &c.]. The looper 4 is actuated to lay the thread in the needle hook by mechanism such as described in Specification 17328/08, [Class 112, Sewing &c.]. The looper is not fixed to the arms 6, however, but is formed on a bar 7 slidingly mounted in a guideway in the lower end of the arm 6. The bar 7 has a universal joint 8 connecting it to the link 9 connected to the arm 11 which is operated by the swinging of the channel guide 1. This arm 11 is pivoted on the head of a shaft 12 and is secured to an arm 14 of the cam lever 15 which carries a cam roll 18 working in a groove in the cams 19. By this means, the looper is moved up and down in synchronism with the needle. The cam arm 21 which turns the channel guide towards and away from the work carries a cam roll 22. This causes the looper to dip substantially in the direction of the length of the needle during each cycle of the machine, from its unusually elevated position, so that it can by means of the mechanism of Specification 17328/08, [Class 112, Sewing &c.], lay the thread in the needle hook. As the needle moves back to draw its thread loop through the work, the looper is swung to the left and is raised from its dipped position so that the thread finger 5 can take its bight of thread, Fig. 2.
