Abstract

369,195. Centrifugal m a c h i n e s. SHARPLES SPECIALTY CO., 23rd Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Jones, L. D. ; c/o Sharples Specialty Co., 23rd Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) Sept. 13, 1930, No. 27424. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 23.] The solids deposited inside a centrifugal machine are advanced to the point of discharge by ploughs which are arranged on a hub mounted coaxially with the machine drum for differential rotation with respect thereto. In the example shown the drum has a perforate wall 11, Fig. 2, but the arrangement may be applied to an imperforate drum. A hub 14 keyed to the hollow driving shaft 15 is connected by arms 13 to the drum which is provided with a perforated lining 17 and has an inwardly extending flange 19 to prevent material from escaping downwards. The shaft 20 is supported inside the hollow shaft 15 and carries a hub 21 which has a chamber 22 for the reception of the liquid for treatment and hollow fan-like members 23 for its distribution ; the latter members 23 have vanes 25 to carry the liquid round. Ploughs 26 of disc form are mounted on stems 30 pivoted to bracket parts 28 threaded into the hub 21 and locked by a nut ; the discs 26 may rotate on their supports, or they may be fixed. Each plough is adjusted so that its edge cuts into the deposited solids, and the face of the plough rolls the solids over towards the discharge end. The ploughs are arranged in groups, those in one group being in staggered relation with those of another group. The liquid mixture passes from the chamber 22 and distributers 23 to the drum through which the clean liquid passes into the chamber 35 for discharge. Differential rotation between the shafts 15, 20 causes the ploughs to advance annular strips of solids to discharge over the upper end of the bowl. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, a frusto-conical plate 40 deflects liquid discharged through the drum to pass over the inner wall 43 of the trough formed in the liquid collecting compartment 44. The solids are discharged from the bottom of the drum and the bearing for the shaft 15 is provided with a felt seal 45. The hub 47 has a series of hollow bosses 63, Fig. 6, in each of which is inserted a plough bracket 65 carrying a plough 66, Fig. 8, formed as a sector of a disc and provided with an integral stud 72 resting in an opening in the bracket and secured by a pin. Washing liquid may be supplied through the pipe 58 to the annular chamber 55 from which it passes by apertures 57 to the annular chamber 53. Passages 59 convey it downwards to pipes 60 which are fitted with caps 61 having discharge slots through which the liquid is distributed over the inner surface of the cake of solids.
