Abstract

368,940. Hydraulic shock - absorbers. HOUDAILLE, M. and ETABLISSEMENTS M. HOUDAILLE, 50, Rue Raspail, Levallois-Perret, Seine, France. Feb. 9, 1931, No. 4060. [Class 108 (iii).] In hydraulic shockabsorbers having an air leak orifice from the top of a pressure chamber into a reservoir, the opening is larger than a capilliary opening, is not provided with a valve, and is submerged on the side towards the reservoir. Filtering material may be inserted in the passage leading to the orifice. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an oscillating shaft 22a carries an external operating lever 25a and two internal vanes 20a, 21a movable in a cylindrical casing 12a having two vertical partitions 15a, 16a. The pressure chambers are separated from the reservoir 17a by a partition 13a which also carries the bearing for the shaft 22a. The two chambers into which the casing is divided by the vertical partitions 15a, 16a are provided with one-way replenishing valves 18a at the lower ends. The upper end of each pressure chamber communicates with a reservoir through a plug 35a having a leak orifice 33a which is larger than a capilliary opening and communicates on one side with a small tank 36a closed by a disc 38a. Any liquid leaking from the pressure chamber through the opening 33a fills up the small tank 36a until surplus liquid escapes into the main reservoir 17a through a small opening 39a in the top of the disc 38a. Leakage of liquid from one side to the other of the vanes takes place through radial passages 28a in the shaft, the flow being regulated by a valve 30a which may be screwed in or out by a short lever 9a. A filter 40, Fig. 6, may be interposed between the plug 41 and the pressure chamber. The restricted passage in the plug may be helical, as shown in Fig. 12, the passage being formed by flattening the tops of the threads of a screw plug 41. The ends of the plugs may be slotted or otherwise shaped to facilitate flow of liquid between the orifice and the filtering medium. In a modification shown in Fig. 13, the grooved plugs 146 are submerged by liquid contained in small reservoirs 144 which are supplied with leakage liquid collected by a groove 143 in the bearing of the operating shaft. The adjusting spindle 29 is guided centrally by a collar 140. In the further modification shown in Fig. 18, the packing joint for the operating shaft 23 is formed by a flexible packing ring 250 retained between conical surfaces on a ring 244 and in the end of the cap 238 which is screwed on to the body of the apparatus.
