4 Claims.
'I'his invention relates to pressure governors for fluids, principally gas, of the kind comprising a body formed with an inlet and an outlet for the fluid, an axially slidable piston valve controlling the passage of fluid from the inlet to the outlet and means, such as diaphragms, bellows or a piston, subject `to the pressure on the outlet side, for controlling said piston valve. In such pressure governors the pressure of the fluid on the outlet side tends to displace the control means for the piston valve against the action of a resisting force, such as the weight or the spring force thereof, or the force of a loading spring, the control means then displacing the piston valve for reducing the flow area of the ports controlled by the valve, and when the Weight or spring force of the control means or the force of the loading spring is able to overcome the pressure on the outlet side owing to a reduction thereof the control means causes the valve to be displaced against the action of the fluid pressure thereby increasing the port area, whereby corresponding increase of pressure is occasioned on the outlet side. In this manner a set pressure is maintained on the outlet side of the governor.
The invention has for its object to improve the construction of pressure governors of this kind by the provision of a lubricating arrangement which will require practically no attention, thereby enabling the governor to operate without supervision indefinitely.
According to the invention, a pressure governor for fluids of the kind aforesaid is characterized in that the body is formed internally with a cylinder block open at both ends and adapted to guide the piston valve, spaces communicating with one another and with both ends of the cylinder block being provided above and below said cylinder block for constituting a lubricant chamber.
An agent suitable for preventing gumming may be added to the lubricant.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference t0 the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, and
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of a pressure governor for iluids constructed according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the governor body II has an inlet I and an outlet 2, the passage of fluid from the inlet to the outlet being controlled by the piston valve 3. Ihe latter is influenced by a control piston 4, which communicates with 55 the outlet side through the bore 5 of the venturi reat Britain April 29, 1937 E and the tube 1, the purpose of which will be described later.
The governor body I I is formed internally with a cylinder block 8 for the piston valve 3, which in the example runs in a liner 9. The cylinder block 8 has an inlet port I8 and an outlet port I2 controlled by the piston valve 3, the ports opening into annular passages as shown to ensure equal loading of the valve on all sides.
Spaces I3 and I4 are provided above and below the cylinder block 8 opening into both ends thereof respectively, communicating through lateral spaces or passages I5, the spaces I3, I4, I5 constituting a lubricant chamber, which may be filled with lubricant through passages in the bosses IB, which are subsequently closed by plugs I1.
In the example, the control means for the pisto-n valve 3 comprise, as aforesaid, a control piston 4, the depending skirt of which extends into the space I3 above the cylinder block 8, so that a film of lubricant is formed between the outer surface of the skirt and its guide cylinder whereby this surface is not only adequately lubricated, but a seal is also formed against the escape of gas or other fluid. The tube 'I serves to admit fluid from the outlet port of the governor to the undersurface of the control piston 4 above the level of the lubricant.
It Will be observed that in the fully open position of the piston valve 3 shown in the drawing it projects from the cylinder block at the lower end, while its upper end is Within the cylinder block Thus the upper part of the cylinder block, not occupied by the valve, also becomes filled with lubricant, while the lower end of the valve is immersed into the lubricant, which in this manner is forced to lubricate the piston valve adequately when it moves in its cylinder.
Since the lubricant chamber is permanently lled with lubricant and it is intended to allow the governor to operate for an indefinite period without supervision, a known agent for preventing gumming may be added to the oil if such is used as lubricant.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the specific embodiment herein de-V scribed and illustrated and that modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:-
1. Pressure governor for fluids, principally gas, comprising a body formed with an inlet and an outlet for the fluid, an axially slidablepiston valve controlling the passage of fluid from the inlet to the outlet and means subject to the pressure on the outlet side for controlling said piston valve, characterized in that the body is formed internally with a cylinder block having a bore open at both ends for guiding the piston valve, spaces communicating with one another and with both ends of the cylinder block being provided above and below said cylinder block for constituting a lubricant chamber.
2. Pressure governor according to claim 1 wherein the spaces above and below the cylinder block are in communication through a passage or passages formed between the cylinder block and the governor body.
