368,805. Oil-break switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Slepian, J. ; 1115, Lancaster Street, Pittsburg, U.S.A.). Dec. 3, 1930, No. 36437. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1929. [Class 38 (v).] Arc-rupturing devices. -The arc formed between fixed contacts 7 and a movable contact 11 is extinguished by deionization at the zero of the A.C. cycle by means of a structure of insulating plates 16 as fuller-board with central apertures 17, whereby a certain amount of fluid is absorbed and, on an arc being drawn, is continually decomposed with the result that a constant supply of fresh gas is supplied to the arc to cool and deionize it. Instead of oil, carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen or other liquids or gases may be used. Further, any substance able to emit vapour may be employed in the neighbourhood of the arc, and may be different from that filling the remainder of the container. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a modification in which fluid is retained near the arc by providing gas-filled containers adjacent the fixed contacts to receive the gases generated, so that the gas bubble surrounding the arc is kept from expanning. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
