[Class 28 (ii).] In a machine for plucking and stubbing birds of the type described in Specification 309,004, [Class 28 (ii), Kitchen and like appliances &c.], the deflection of the discs is effected by interposing projections 43 between the adjacent faces of the discs, the projections being arranged near the ends of a diameter, so that as the discs are engaged by guide members, e.g. rollers 49, the discs tilt on the projections and grip the feathers. The discs are carried loosely on a squared shaft 29 and the projections 43 are arranged at a different angular position on each disc. The projections are in the form of knobs and are arranged on one side of the disc and bear against wear strips 42 secured to the opposing face of the adjacent disc. Leather, rubber or like pads 44 may be secured on the gripping-zones of the discs. The rollers 49 are journalled in casings pivoted at 47 to the main casing and are adjustably pressed against the end discs by springs 51. The discs are driven by a motor connected by a belt to a pulley 22 on a shaft 23 carrying a fan 39 which sucks the feathers from the plucking-discs and delivers them to a bag (not shown) which is kept distended by a member 41. Two sets of plucking-discs, which may or may not have the features described above, may be arranged in one machine, one set being of large diameter to remove the feathers and the other being of small diameter to remove the stubs. The bird is placed against an aperture in the casing containing the plucking-discs and, in the case of the feather-plucking discs, the lower edge of the aperture acts as a plucking-bar, whilst in the case of the stub-plucking discs, the upper edge of the aperture serves for this purpose, the stub-disc moving upwardly at the gripping position. The discs may be sector-shaped instead of circular and they may be mounted on gymbals. Two sets of discs may be provided at one plucking position, the sets travelling in the same or opposite directions, or one set of discs reversible in direction may be used.
