Abstract

Poultry and game, dressing.-A machine for plucking feathers from birds comprises a thin metal disc 4, Fig. 5, preferably formed with concentric concave and convex parts as shown, aud secured to a shaft 2. The disc 4 is provided with radial slots 4<a> which, during rotation of the disc, pass in front of a fixed member 5 (see also Fig. 6) haying a pair of radial arms. The members 4 and 5 are maintained in contact by the pressure of springs 20 and 22 respectively. When the bird to be plucked is suitably held against the disc 4 the feathers are caught between the edges of the slots 4<a> and the leading edges E, F of the member 5 and are torn out. A rotatory fan, housed within a casing 1, removes the feathers and delivers them to a discharge channel 3<a>. The fan is mounted on a sleeve 8 rotatable upon the shaft 2 and driven by a pulley 9. The shaft 2 is driven from the sleeve 8 through sprocket wheels 15, 12 on the members connected by chains with a counter-shaft. A baffle-plate 23<a> covers the disc 4 except at the points where plucking is effected thus concentrating the draught at these points. The member 5 may be replaced by a second disc which may be stationary or may be rotated at a speed different from that of the disc 4.
