Dressing poultry.-A machine for plucking poultry comprises an endless s rotatable flexible member in one or more parts, which is deflected to cause gripping surfaces thereon to open and close at predetermined intervals during each rotation. As shown in Fig. 3, a belt D is trained over pulleys B, B<1> having peripheries shaped to distort the belt and bring together members d thereon to grip the feathers, and to separate the members to release them. The pulleys are contained in a casing from which the feathers are, expelled by a rotary fan. In Fig. 6, the arrangement is made more compact by forming the pulleys B, B<1> from a number of discs which are interdigitated. In a modification, two belts, preferably of laminated steel, are trained over pulleys, and studs projecting inwardly from the belts engage cam grooves in the pulleys which cause the belts to move towards or away from one another, the feathers being gripped between the belts. Figs. 9 and 10 show a construction in which the grippers D are connected together but are mounted on separate belts. The belts may, however, be unconnected and retained on the pulleys by side flanges. In a further modification, inclined rollers are engaged first with the upper runs of two belts and then with the lower runs to cause them to advance and recede.
