Abstract

<PICT:0368409/III/1> <PICT:0368409/III/2> <PICT:0368409/III/3> A multiple blade device for gumming the edges of sets of paper sheets, which may be of equal or unequal widths, comprises a spindle 6 with three rotatable hubs 5, Fig. 3, carrying a set of metal bars 3 to which the metal gumming blades 1 are secured as by setscrews 2, the blades 1 being readily detachable so that they may be arranged as desired for gumming different sets of papers. This gumming device, shown at 13, Fig. 2, is carried between a pair of lever arms 7 which are rocked by a chain drive 25 so as to move the blades between a gum-fed roller (not shown) and the sheets to be gummed. The different blades may be brought into action as desired, by controlling a trip finger 21, which is normally held in the position shown by a spring 21a so as to engage teeth 22 on a ratchet wheel on the gumming device, and bring the blades 1 into action in turn. When it is desired to use one blade several times the trip finger 21 is held out of action. The correct angular position of the blades is ensured by a spring-pressed plunger 15, Fig. 6, carried by a sleeve 13 and engaging in slots 16 in a collar 12 on one of the hubs 5. Vertical movement of the blades when approaching the gum roller and the sheets at the two ends of the stroke is ensured by a rod 18 rigidly secured to the sleeve 13 and sliding through a bearing 19 journalled on a post 20.
