Abstract
368,169. Hair-waving appliances. STERLING, B. A., 228, North La Salle Street, Chicago, U.S.A. June 20, 1931, No. 17925. [Class 131.] A hair-waving appliance of the kind comprising two clamping-jaws hinged together at one end and latched at the other, is fitted with latching-means which gives a uniform clamping action despite variation in the amount of hair within the jaws. Rectangular and L-shaped members 5, 6 respectively of wood, fibre, or other heat-insulating material are pivoted together at 7 so as to open as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A shaft 51 pivoted to one member swings in a vertical plane and enters a slot in the bracket 55 on the other member so that the nut 53 can be adjusted to clamp the members together. Rubber blocks 10 are fixed to the bases of the members and rubber jaws 20 are mounted resiliently between them, being carried by bent portions of thin metal plates secured to the upper surfaces. A curler 34 is mounted in an upstanding fork 33 on the member 6 at one end and in a composite fork 36, 37 at the other end, the two parts of which are connected to the members 5, 6 respectively. A winding knob 64 and ratchet 66 also are provided on the curler shaft, while a retainer 60 also is provided to maintain the hair in the coiled position. Separation of the members 5, 6 automatically releases the ratchet-gear.
