Abstract

367,879. Internal-expanding brakes. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.-(Assignees of Ford, H. ; Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.) Nov. 20, 1930, No. 35017. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1929. [Class 103 (i).] In an internal-expanding double-shoe brake the shoes 10, 11 are expanded by a floating wedge 46 acting on rollers 51 on the ends of the shoes, and the other ends of the shoes are pivoted at 14 to pins 12 slidable in a housing 18 in which the pins are loosely mounted to permit radial movement of the pivoted ends of the shoes towards the brake drum 54 when the brake is applied. The pins have chisel-ends 16 engaging a serrated conical member 17 having a screwed shank 25 which may be rotated to compensate for wear of the shoes. A washer 29, Fig. 4, is riveted to the pointed end of the member 17 and slides in a sleeve 28 in the housing 18 to form a dust-shield and a sleeve 23 is contracted on the shank of the cone for the same purpose. The wedge 46 is connected by a rod 36, passing through a king bolt on the front axle of the vehicle, with an operating- cam 44 on a shaft connected with the brake pedals or levers. A central web 52, Fig. 6, of the wedge extends between the rollers 51 and lateral movement of the wedge and of the shoes is prevented by fixed washers 47 mounted on a stud 48 on the anchor plate 19, the washers 47 acting as a stop for the shoes in their inoperative position.
