Abstract
459,861. Brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. July 15, 1935, No. 20161. Convention date, July 16, 1934. Addition to 444,614. [Class 103 (i)] A brake comprising a pair of shoes each adapted to anchor at one part thereof when the brake drum is turning in one direction and at another part when the drum is turning in the other direction and which are applied by a pair of levers each pivoted on one shoe and engaging the other as described in the parent Specification are provided with means for equalizing the applying forces on the shoes. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, levers 44, 45 are pivoted at 46, 47 to the shoes 14, 16 respectively, and each engages a thrust member 50 which passes freely through the anchors 22, 24, secured to the back plate 12 and engages the other shoe. The levers 44, 45 are connected by links 42, 43 to a floating equalizing lever 32 to which force is applied by a pin 20 which extends through the steering knuckle of a vehicle steering wheel and is engaged by an arm 36 on a shaft 38 journalled on the axle. When the drum is rotating counterclockwise, corresponding to forward travel of the vehicle, the left-hand end of shoe 14 and the right-hand end of shoe 16 bears on the corresponding anchor 22, 24 through a nut 54 on the thrust member 50 and a shoulder 53. When the drum rotates in the opposite direction the other ends of the shoes engage the respective anchors. The length of the arms of the lever 32 are so proportioned that the applying force exerted by the levers 44, 45 on the two shoes are equal in forward operation. Adjustment of the shoes is effected bv turning the nuts 54. The nuts 54 are looked by a stamping 76 hooked on the adjacent anchor and having a ridge engaging serrations on the nut. Release springs 28, 29 are connected each to one shoe and to one of the stampings 76. Release springs 26, 27 each attached to an anchor and a shoe are weaker than springs 28, 29 whereby in forward braking the ends of the shoes by which the shoes anchor do not leave the anchors. The anchors may be mounted in radial slots in the back plate for adjustment. For a non- steering wheel the lever 32 is engaged by an arm on a shaft passing through the back plate. In another construction the lever 32 is pivoted on a lever pivoted to the inner side of the back plate and operated by a cable passing the back plate. In Fig. 11, cranked levers 444, 445 are pivoted at 446, 447 to the shoes 414, 416 respectively and engage thrust members 451 adjustable in length and passing through the anchors 424. Each thrust member comprises a screwed inner part 453 notched to engage the corresponding shoe. The part 451 has a shoulder 452 for engagement with the anchor. The equalizing lever 432 is pivoted upon a lever 482 pivoted at 484 to the back plate and engages lever 444 directly and is connected bv link 490 to lever 445. The lower end of lever 482 is connected to an operating cable. The release springs comprise springs 494 each connected to both shoes, and springs 496 connected each to an anchor or the back plate and to one of the shoes.
