Abstract

439,123. Internal-expanding brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. May 30, 1934, No. 16117. Convention date, Oct. 2, 1933. [Class 103 (i)] In brakes of the type comprising a friction means adapted to be expanded into engagement with a drum by an operating cylinder carried by the friction means and in which the friction means anchors at one end or the other according to the direction of rotation of the drum, the cylinder has an inlet projection that projects through a slot in the backing plate the slot being closed by a spring- loaded cover. In Fig. 1, a pair of floating connected shoes 114, 116 is arranged to anchor on an anchor 124. An operating cylinder 170 has a pair of projections 181 whereby it is secured to the shoe 116 by bolts 180, 182 while the piston rod 174 engages the other shoe 114. The inlet projection 170a of the cylinder extends through a slot in the backing plate 112 and a plate 112<a> closing the slot is held against the plate by a spring 189 between the plate and a washer on the projection. An unbalancing spring 129 connected to the shoe 116 and to the anchor 124 is provided in addition to the spring 128 to ensure that the shoe 114 leaves the anchor first in braking and that the shoe 116 only leaves the anchor when braking with clockwise rotation of the drum. Alternative means for applying the brake comprises a lever 164 pivoted to the shoe 116 and having slotted connection with a link 160 connected to the shoe 114. In one alternative means for mounting the cylinder, a single projection such as 181 is provided and the end of the cylinder seats on the shoe and in another, pairs of projections embracing the shoe are provided both on the end of the cylinder and upon its cylindrical wall. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a brake in which the alternative operating means comprises a floating lever having thrust projections extending between the shoe ends on opposite sides of the anchor and connected to a cable which extends through the anchor plate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
