Abstract
In the recovery of gases and vapours from gas or vapour mixtures by adsorption in bodies such as active carbon, silica gel, &c., and expulsion by means of steam, for example the recovery of nitrocellulose solvent vapours in the artificial silk industry, the gases, following the flushing period and without the interposition of special cooling or drying processes, are heated, if necessary, and allowed to act on the adsorption medium at temperatures up to 120 DEG C., preferably between 40 and 70 DEG C., the elevated temperature being maintained during the whole or at the commencement only of the adsorption period, no other heat being supplied. The temperature may be continuously or intermittently reduced, if desired. The gases may be diluted with inert gases at the commencement of the operation and, after the adsorptive capacity of the medium has been partially increased, the supply of diluent gas is progressively diminished or suspended. A vacuum may be produced in the adsorber prior to admitting the gases.
