Abstract

181,376. Goldschmidt Akt.-Ges., T. June 9, 1921, [Convention date]. Gases, separating mixtures of.-In the recovery or concentration of the constituents of a gas mixture by selective adsorption in a material such as carbon, the adsorbed gas or vapour is expelled by the passage of hot gas which has been previously enriched with respect to the constituent to be recovered; the adsorbent is subsequently cooled by the passage of cold enriched gas or by cold fresh gas. Thus, gas to be treated is passed by a blower c<1> through the adsorbent chamber or tower a; when the adsorbent is sufficiently charged, the chamber is put into communication with a heater b<1> containing enriched gas from a previous operation, and the hot gas circulated by a blower c<2>; the surplus gas or vapour in the heater system escapes through a valve d<1> and is collected in a gas-holder e ; for cooling the adsorbent, the chamber a is put into communication with a cooler b<2> containing gas from a previous working period and circulated by blower c<3>, and in this case the resulting decrease in pressure is compensated for automatically by the introduction of fresh gas through a valve d<2>; alternatively, fresh gas may be used for cooling, the heated gases being exhausted by the blower c<3>, and then passed through the cooler b<2> to a second adsorbent chamber (not shown).
