[Class 74 (ii).] Jacks 1 are arranged in a sleeve 3 within the upper needle cylinder 4 of a superposed cylinder rib machine so as to be actuated selectively to change the relative position of yarns a, b fed to the needles in plating relation. The jacks 1 are mounted so that they can be oscillated by cams 13, 15 and moved axially with the needles by a cam 22. The cams 13 comprise pivoted levers actuated by pins 18 in a pattern drum 17, and move the corresponding jacks 1 so that a hooked portion 9 of each of such jacks engages the upper yarn a, which is normally the outer yarn, to pull it to the inside of the other yarn. The cam 15 is so constructed that the jacks 1 not moved by the pattern cams 13 engage the yam a by their front edges 9a to hold the yarn to the outside of the yarn b. The pattern drum 17 is intermittently rotated, means being provided for rotating it once per revolution of the needle cylinders, or once per two revolutions of the cylinders. To enable the patterning effect to be neutralized, a cam 30, which can be raised or lowered under pattern control, is provided for engaging butts 14, 14a on the jacks to raise the jacks after they have been depressed by the cam 22 and so free the hooks 9 of the selected jacks from the yarns a.
