Abstract
365,371. Compound glass. HAWKES, Ltd., O. C., and HAWKES, B. G. T., Globe Works, Bromsgrove Street, Birmingham. Feb. 19, 1931, No. 5206. [Class 140.] In a process for making laminated glass, laminµ of glass and cellulose acetate are immersed in a plasticizing bath containing glycerol triacetate and camphor with or without a non-solvent such as toluol or alcohol and pressed together to form a sandwich which is then removed from the bath. After removing excess of liquid and air by manual pressure, squeegees or rollers the sandwich is subjected to heat and pressure. In making domed or convex lenses, the sandwich is placed between resilient rubber parts a, held in a clamp comprising lever members b, bl which are adjustable by a fly-nut d on a screwed rod c. The clamps are suspended from a rod in an autoclave which may contain water so that the lenses are above the level of the water, steam is admitted and a pressure of 30 lbs. per square inch is maintained for 10-15 minutes. Alternatively the lenses are immersed in the water at a temperature of 80-100‹ C. and steam is admitted to maintain a pressure of 40-80 lbs. per square inch for 15 minutes.
