Abstract
365,065. Aircraft launching apparatus; cranes. SALMON, P., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire, and HARPER, H. J. C., Air Ministry, Kingsway, London. Oct. 13, 1930, No. 30586. [Class 4.] A catapult for launching aircraft comprises a track having part of its length foldable or otherwise adapted to serve as the jib of a crane for lifting the aircraft on to the launching carriage &c. A tracK in three parts is shown of which the rearmost part 1 can swivel about a pedestal 2 on a ship's deck &c. An intermediate section 11 can turn about a pivot 10 on a platform 9 hinged to the part 1 at 8, and an outer section 13 is hinged to the intermediate section at 12. For use as a launching track the parts are set in alignment as shown in dotted lines, but when it is desired to raise an aircraft from the water, the section 11 with the section 13 is turned upside down about the pivot 10 and the section 11 gradually raised to a vertical position. The section 13 is meanwhile adjusted until ultimately it is at rightangles to the section 11 which can then be slewed about the pivot 10 to enable the aircraft to be lowered on to a carriage on the section 1. The aircraft is connected to a. cable 16 passing over pulleys to a winch 17 driven by an electromotor through spur and worm gear, and the various sections are moved by electromotors acting through pinion and quadrant gear 18, 19 and worm gear 20, or hydraulic rams may effect movements about the axes 8, 12.
