Abstract

364,886. Starting ; fuel pumps. HUMBOLDT - DEUTZMOTOREN AKT. - GES., (formerly MASCHINENBAU - ANSTALT HUMBOLDT), 149, Deutz-MĀ³lheimerstrasse, Deutz, Cologne, Germany. Feb. 6, 1931, No. 3865. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1930. [Class 7 (v).] In a controlling device for Diesel locomotive engines normally working with solid injection and started by the combustion of fuel with compressed air, members for controlling the admission of fuel and compressed air are connected for simultaneous adjustment so that the charge of compressed air corresponds to that of fuel. As shown, the cylinder B of a two-stroke engine has a scavenging-air inlet C, an exhaust port D, a fuel nozzle F, an ignition device G and a starting-air valve E actuated from a cam N on the shaft H by means of levers K, K<111> connected by a link K<11>, The fuel pump J is actuated by a cam L on the shaft H, and the cams L, N are movable axially on the shaft by means of levers O, O<1> connected by a link P, a spring Q being interposed between the link P and the lever O<1>. In the normal running position shown in Fig. 2, the lever K of the starting valve E is not actuated, and the roller J<1> on the pump plunger is in the mid position a<1> on the slope of the cam L. For starting, the levers O, O<1> are moved to the left until the starting-valve lever K is actuated by the mid portion b of the cam N and the pump plunger by the end portion b<1> of the cam bl, so that a double charge of fuel is admitted with the starting air. In this position, the lever O<1> engages a stop X and further movement of the lever O to the left moves the cam N to position c and compresses the spring Q, so that the compressed air charge is increased without increasing the fuel charge. For slow running, the lever O<1> is moved to the right sufficiently to bring the cam L into the position x, in which a small fuel charge is admitted without compressed air.
