Abstract
363,952. Overhead cables. PIRELLIGENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., 343, Euston Road, London, and MATTHEWS, C. E., Merrowdown, Avenue Rise, Bushey, Hertfordshire. May 22, 1931, No. 15221. [Class 36.] In order to facilitate maintenance work on overhead line insulator strings, the strings are connected to adjustable tensioning or compressing screws, turnbuckles or hydraulic devices adapted to bridge the strings without need for attachment to the tower. The screw device is held in position by conductor line tension and is adapted to relieve the insulators of tension so that they can be removed. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a frame comprises sets of side members 2, 21, 3, 3<1>, respectively, the members 2, 2<1> being connected together by a plate 4, and the members 3, 31 by a plate 4<1>. Bolt holes 5 in the plates 4, 4<1> enable the frame to fit strings of different length. The members 21, 31 are pin-jointed to a yoke 7 which is formed with an attachment 8 for bolting it to a socket connector 9. The members 2, 3 are screwthreaded for adjusting nuts 10, 10<1>, 11, 11<1> respectively. Trunnion fittings 12, 12<1>, attached to a yoke 13, are mounted between the adjusting nuts. The yoke 13 is pivoted to a swivel joint 15 on a cross-arm of the tower, the end of the insulator string being attached to the swivel joint 15. In a modified construction the string of insulators is pivotally linked to the joint 15. In the construction of Fig. 3, turnbuckle rods 27, 28 carrying an operating sleeve 29 are attached to adaptors 22, 23 which are secured to yokes 24, 25 at the respective ends of a double string of insulators 26.
