Abstract

363,718. Ironing-presses. AMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY CO., Norwood Station, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Sept. 23, 1930, No. 28455. Convention date, April 18. [Class 138 (ii).] In a laundry or similar press operated by fluidpressure the power unit is energized by admitting the pressure to a valve casing for actuating the valve therein to close the exhaust port from the pressure cylinder and such valve is held closed only so long as the supply of pressure fluid to the casing is maintained. Two valves 21, 25 require simultaneous and maintained manual operation to permit fluid pressure to pass from a supply pipe 19 through a pipe 27 to a casing 28. The fluid pressure moves the valve 29 in the casing 28 against a spring 100, or against a spring which acts on a press-closing pedal which is linked to a bell-crank lever 48, to a position in which it closes the exhaust port 31 which is provided with a silencer 33. Fluid pressure passes from the casing 28 through a port 30 to the cylinder 16 of the power unit of which the piston rod 14 is pivoted at its free end to one of the usual'pair of press closing toggle links. As long as the handles 38, 44 of the valves 21, 25 are operated to maintain the supply through the pipe 27 the inlet 29 will be kept open and the exhaust port closed but when the handles are released the pressure of the fluid trapped in the system is insufficient to overcome the spring 100 or the spring associated with the release pedal and the inlet valve 29 closes, the cylinder exhausts through the port 31 and the press is returned to full open position by restoring springs. The Specification also describes means for admitting a supplementary supply of fluid pressure to the cylinder 16 after the press has been substantially closed as described in Specification 363,724. the full pressure then existing in the cylinder 16 being sufficient to maintain the valve 29 in the position wherein it closes the exhaust port 31 until it is moved to the position shown by depression of the release pedal, this movement of the release pedal simultaneously shutting off the supplementary fluid pressure supply.
