Abstract

A bituminous binding material, for use in road surfacing, which is fluid at ordinary and low temperatures, consists of a solution of tar, pitch, asphalt, or mixtures thereof, in chlorinated hydrocarbons together with other hydrocarbons. The dissolving of the bituminous substance may be effected under heat and pressure. In an example, 632 parts of tar and 223 parts of pitch are heated in an autoclave to about 75 DEG C. and are then agitated with a mixture of hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g. 75 parts of benzene and 70 parts of trichlorethylene) while the temperature is gradually lowered. The binding material may be applied in a thin layer to existing road surfaces by spraying &c. or may be incorporated with gravel &c. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises a cold flowing road-surfacing material made from bituminous material, e.g. asphalt or pitch, and rubber mixed together and liquefied by light oils preferably chlorinated. The pitch &c. and rubber are combined to a homogeneous pulp in an autoclave with agitator and backflow condenser before adding the oils under intermittent alternating superpressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
