Abstract
A two-stage process of coating aggregates with bituminous materials comprises treatment with (1) hot molten bitumen at a temperature above 120 DEG F. and (2) bituminous emulsion, in either order. The aggregate may be preheated and this may be effected by mixing it with a combustible material, such as sulphur. A final coating of powdered bituminous material may be applied after the two-stage process. The product may be stored without causing premature agglomeration; when used it is compacted by the application of pressure with or without heat. A hydrocarbon or other bitumen solvent may be added when the material is brought into use. The invention is applicable to the coating of fibrous material as well as to mineral aggregates of the kind used for making roads &c. Specifications 226,032, 254,012, [both in Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.], and 333,433, [Class 22, Cements &c.], are referred to.
