Abstract

A light-coloured surfacing material for roads or floors is obtained by mixing (a) a light-coloured material capable of being scattered and having an adhesive capacity, obtained by mixing a light-coloured pulverulent filling material with a water-insoluble organic binder which does not darken the powder, and if desired with a colouring material, with (b) a black or dark mass comprising a mineral filler and tar, bitumen, asphalt or the like, e.g. natural asphalt. The powder of mix (a) may be a water-insoluble organic or inorganic substance, particularly ground light-coloured stone, or kaolin, gypsum, talc, asbestos, quartz, cement or glass powder. The binder of mix (a) may be a light-coloured variety of asphalt or bitumen, natural or artificial resin, stearin pitch, waxes, fats, petroleum jelly, resin oil, and rubber or derivatives thereof, and may be softened with oils. The viscosity of the light binder should vary inversely with the viscosity of the dark binder. The product may be laid cold, and before application thereof the road may be coated with a binder. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of the light masses alone, to the successive application of dark and light masses to a road, and to the successive application of a red mixture of powder and binder and a mixture of broken gravel and binder. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
