[Class 51 (ii).] A coke cooling chamber having hollow walls for the circulation of.a'cool-.,- ing fluid is movably arranged in front of a battery of coke ovens, the capacity of the chamber being at least twice the normal amount of the charge of a coke oven. The cooling chamber 4 shown is mounted on a frame 3 running on roller tracks 2a, 2b and has its vertical side walls composed of hollow metal elements 6a, 6b, 6d bolted to channel irons 8 and connected by conduits 6m so that the cooling fluid supplied by a conduit 9a ascends in vertical columns. Cooling fluid is also supplied by conduits 9b, 9d to the lower, front, and upper walls. The heated cooling fluid is discharged through a conduit 10 either into a gutter arranged along one of the roller tracks or into a. heat exchanger or other heat-utilizing device. The cooling chamber is charged through an opening 11 which is then suitably closed. The volume of air in the chamber is approximately twice that of the charge so that convection currents of air a are produced. These currents. on reaching the inclined upper wall are split. up into one current ascending along the upper wall and descending along the rear wall and two lateral currents b, c descending along the side walls. The upper wall may be provided with a longitudinal rib 12 to facilitate the formation of the lateral air currents. The cooled coke is discharged through an opening 5. In a modified form, of apparatus the lower wall is not inclined, the whole chamber being. mounted on trunnions so as to facilitate discharge of the coke.
