Abstract

<PICT:0363051/III/1> <PICT:0363051/III/2> Oils are cracked under low pressure by vapourizing them before or during passage through tubes heated to cracking temperature and filled with non-absorbent silica or siliceous material in a state of fine division, e.g. silver sand, powdered calcined flint or pure silica which may be mixed with mica dust or asbestos and acts as a turbulence agent in the path of the oils. The latter are caused by air or vapour pressure to flow from a storage tank 1 through a charging pipe 2 to preheating and cracking tubes 9, 11 arranged in upper and lower compartments 10, 12 of a furnace B. The cracked products pass through evaporating and fractionating columns 5, 7 in which the crude oil may be preheated by passage through coils 5, 7 to a condenser 16. The tubes 9, 11 in Fig. 2 are filled with comminuted siliceous material 14 contained between perforated screens 19 held in position by vitreous annular linings 18 fitting into enlarged end portions 11b of the tubes. The linings are maintained in position by springs 22 or by a clamping ring. The siliceous material may be revivified by passing air through the tubes which may be made annular in form by employing one tube within another and packing the annular passage thus formed with the silica. Specification 23831/09, [Class 51, Furnaces and kilns], is referred to.
